Facebook has long been closely watched for how it implements its policies against graphic violence and other potentially offensive material. That scrutiny is now turning to content related to China, as the social-networking giant’s leaders continue to indicate an interest in a market where it has long been banned.
Chinese dissident author Liao Yiwu doctored this photo of artist Meng Huang being arrested in Stockholm while staging a nude protest for the release of jailed Chinese Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo. An unaltered version of this photo was taken down by Facebook FB -0.94% this week, supposedly for violating the site’s community standards.

Chinese writer Liao Yiwu says two photos he posted of an artist friend’s nude protest in Stockholm, Sweden, were deleted by Facebook this week. The artist, Meng Huang, was protesting earlier this month against the continued imprisonment of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo in China and other issues, said Mr. Liao, who lives in Berlin.

Mr. Liao called Mr. Meng’s streaking protest a form of performance art and said Facebook should be able to distinguish between artistic expression and vulgar displays. To get around Facebook’s limitations on nudity, Mr. Liao said he altered the two pictures of the nude artist by covering Mr. Meng’s nether regions with images of Mao Zedong.
